The CocoRosie Sisters

CocoRosie is an American duo based in France and formed by sisters Bianca Leilani "Coco" and Sierra Rose "Rosie" Casady in 2003.
Sierra mainly plays the guitar, piano and harp, and contributes vocals. Bianca sings and manipulates various children's toys/electronic & percussion instruments as well as other exotic noisemakers. CocoRosie performed strictly as a duo early on but in recent years they have appeared with various backing musicians at live shows, usually a bassist, synth player and beatboxer. They have been a very active touring group, playing a seemingly endless stream of dates across Europe and making several trips across the US and all points beyond.
In late 2006 they appeared as a featured act at the Touch and Go Records 25th anniversary block party at the famed Hideout club in Chicago along with a reunited Big Black, Scratch Acid, Killdozer, The Ex, Uzeda and many others.
In 2007 they appeared at the annual Coachella art and music festival in California.
In early 2008 they performed together with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.

Nina Simone was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933 in North Carolina, the sixth of seven children in a poor family. She began playing the piano at age 4 and was classically trained, attending the Juilliard School in New York for one year. She had hoped to attend the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, but was rejected — one of many disappointments she would attribute to racism.
Simone turned to singing jazz and popular music as a way to make money, performing in nightclubs in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, N.J. In the late 1950s Simone recorded her first tracks, including "Plain Gold Ring" and "Don't Smoke in Bed." But she gained fame in 1959 with her recording of "I Loves You Porgy," from the George and Ira Gershwin Broadway musical, "Porgy & Bess." Soon Nina Simone the nightclub singer became Nina Simone the star, performing at Town Hall, Carnegie Hall and the Newport Jazz Festival.
There was a time when Nina Simone was dubbed "the high priestess of soul," a term she hated, not only because it smacked of marketing hype but because it tried to put her in a box she'd never have fit in comfortably. While Simone certainly invested all her work with soul, she blurred boundaries and jumped genres, embracing jazz, pop, blues, spirituals, folk, French chansons, African song and the works of contemporary songwriters like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, the Bee Gees and the Beatles -- Simone's reading of "Here Comes the Sun" remains a transcendent moment of elegance and joy. Simone was also one of the first African American artists to embrace traditional African garb, adding regal bearing to her already dramatic presence.

Tiff Randol is an American singer and musician. She recently contacted me to share her musical project. She is currently living in California to work on a project she called "The Polyamorous Collection". Instead of producing the CD and releasing it all at once, she is releasing the collection in stages.
Every month of 2009 she is putting out one song, and three times a week she is putting out a video blog to chronicle her journey. It's an exploration of love, sex and romance. More than that, it's a story about how she is changing and growing as an artist.

I was a wild child, running around naked at 4am every night blasting records on my fisher price record player. Playful, intense, sensitive – a typical scorpio.
It’s about the same now only a couple decades later.
Got my feet wet playing rocknroll in new york. Played a lot of fantastic shows, ran around in caution tape, dove off a drumset into a jello pit and had a blast.
While I was having the time of my life — I wasn’t satisfied. I felt trapped. There was more I wanted to express, so I took a step back, did some soul searching and decided I wanted to make a solo record.
I didn’t think I could. I felt totally paralyzed.
I didn’t have the money
I didn’t have the experience
I didn’t have
I didn’t have
Then I realized it was all bullshit and I was just afraid to make a mistake. One of the things I think makes art beautiful are the mistakes with brilliant recovery that people call accidents or miracles, not to mention that one of my favorite sayings is “Be Afraid and Act Anyway”.
So I got off my high horse, decided to have a go at it in my home studio and had the most amazing experience of my life. I felt like i was three again. I could care less about trying to please anyone or do it right. All that mattered was playing. I got a new sense of freedom and self expression. I felt like i crawled out of a cocoon. During that time in the studio I produced “Kiss Me Kiss Me” and a slew of new songs, which led to an idea to create something a little different than a typical album.
2009 is a new year and I decided to make it a blank canvas for a collection of songs, videos, and art. The title of the collection is “Polyamorous” and it explores the world of love, sex, and romance. I’ll be releasing one song a month, video blogs, music videos, and art. I’m recording and filming as I go - definitely a challenge, but a fun one. The title “Polyamorous” was inspired when i stumbled upon the word and fell in love with it. It was inspired by many people and many experiences, hence the tub of lemons ;)

To me polyamorous represents our ability to fall in love with everyone on the planet. What a nice place it would be if we were all polyamorous. This collection is dedicated to that part of you that screams freedom, unconditional love, and play.

Mathieu Chedid (also known as -M-) is a French rock singer-songwriter and also an accomplished guitar player.
Mathieu Chedid is of Lebanese descent through his paternal grandmother. He is the son of French singer Louis Chedid, and the grandson of the Egyptian-born French writer and poetess of Lebanese descent Andrée Chedid who has written lyrics for him.
Chedid took an interest in music at an early age, notably with Julien Voulzy and Pierre Souchon, the sons of Laurent Voulzy and Alain Souchon. Together they formed a few short-lasting groups such as Mat Mat (Checkmate Checkmate), Les bébés fous (The crazy babies) or Les poissons rouges (The "red fish," a French phrase equivalent to the English "goldfish"). In order to jump-start his career, he didn't hesitate to collaborate with a number of artists, both on stage and on his albums. He has collaborated with NTM, Sinclair and Billy ze Kick. He also performed a duet with his father entitled T'as beau pas être beau in 1978, and has played as the opening act for Texas concerts. Recently, he has collaborated with Sean Lennon on the song "L'éclipse," which is a French remake of Lennon's song "Parachute." Chedid contributed vocals, lyrics and instrumentals.
Chedid performs and records under the stage name -M-. As a character, -M- is noted for having a mysterious nature, which he emphasizes by wearing flamboyant clothes, and styling his hair into the shape of an M. This character is the dominating motif in his live performances, music videos, and album art. The vivid and often whimsical imagery they use often relates to the themes of love, and the letter M. The name itself comes from Chedid's first initial, but it is also identical in pronunciation to the French word "aime".

Every root is on the rise gone

To carry our seeds on and on
Yesterday dreams into darkness
Nothing but its moments to go
Within every color of its starkness
When sunshine will return in glow
Then comes the night in heart waves
Singing a song of its sadness
Following a love song that craves
On to your touch and your madness
Nothing to give or to take
Only the flowers of its darkish mood
Feeling that shadows might up wake
On to the street’s blossoms nude
The summer is coming like evening
On to the glow of the night
When every gleam in dim will sing
To follow the lost glow in bright
Alain Bashung was the son of a factory worker and an Algerian father, whom he never knew. His mother remarried, and at the age of one, Bashung was sent to Strasbourg to live with his new step-father's parents. He therefore spent his childhood in the countryside.
The multi-platinum artist Alain Bashung has spent his career singing a pop-chanson repertoire. He received the Legion of Honour on 1 January 2009 and he received three prestigious Victoires de la musique awards during a recent ceremony at the Paris Zenith, including best male artist, best album for "Bleu Pétrole" (Barclay/Universal) and best live show. With 11 such awards, he became the most celebrated French musician in history. The award ceremony was his last public appearance. He appeared frail, but still performed 'Residents de la Republique'.
Bashung, who had cancer, had to postpone several dates of his current tour. While receiving his award, he said he hoped that record companies would "remain in a human dimension by making people happy with records."
He died in Paris on 14 March 2009 from lung cancer at the age of 61.
