We Went Out At Night

We went out at night, moving through streets
too narrow for traffic.

The future was quoted on posters by old men
always driven
in black sedans.

We walked past hotels where dark stood still
in the rooms,
past women in green stockings,
war paint running
down their faces.

I remember, one night, François said
the only future was
death of bourgeoisie.

One of the women winked,
a blue and red skull
on her left eyelid.
