Flesh and Acrylic by Ben Heine (From 2012 Documentary)

This is a Flesh and Acrylic project Ben Heine made in 2011 for a documentary filmed by Italian director Davide Gentile. Model: Caroline Madison

In Flesh and Acrylic, Heine creates abstract acrylic paintings on large wooden panels. A living person is integrated in the artwork and is part of the whole abstract composition. The end result is often very colorful, intuitive, wild and eye-catching. There is something choreographic about Flesh And Acrylic. When the painting is complete, the model seems to have completely evaporated. Each piece involves Heine coating human life with acrylic paint to match large wooden backdrops, whether these backdrops are decorated with colorful stripes, maniacal splatters, abstract speckles and swirls, or more ordered doodles. It usually takes Heine between 1 and 3 hours to complete such works (source).

They captured some 55 hours of film footage, the final film is 35 minutes long. You can view some backstage photos here below.

With your petals of yellow and leaves of green, I see the splendour of creation... These are pictures I took in my garden in Braives, Belgium. Model: Caroline Madison // MUA: Michaelle Markus. See more photos from this shooting.

This is a long exposure photo. This picture is the result of an improvised collaboration with my long time friend Stoff. Model: Caroline Madison. I first "flashed" her then took a 30 seconds picture, while stoff was doing the magic orb in the middle of the composition. This photo is dedicated to my friend Marcel De Munnynck, who passed away a few days ago...

This is another long exposure photo. I love how scary Caroline looks... (see a detail here below). This picture is the result of an improvised collaboration with my long time friend Stoff (make sure to check out his page , there are some amazing creations to view).

The silhouette on the left is me using Stoff's camera to "flash" the model while my own camera (placed on another tripod just behind me) was capturing the moment =D

Stoff makes incredible "orbs" by playing with home made light sources. Luckily, Caroline Madison was there with us... I first "flashed" her, while stoff was doing the magic orb in the middle of the composition.

I recently took this photo by night at the seaside in Hastings, while I was travelling to the UK for an exhibition in London (Battersea Affordable Art Fair). I lived in Hastings from 2002 to 2003, it was so nice to be there again!

A picture I took in a magic garden in Braives, Belgium... Please see here below two details, some variations and photos of the make up by Michaelle Markus. Model: Caroline Madison. MUA: Michaelle Markus. (Taken with my new Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I love it).

85% of madness, a fantastic model, 15 liters of acrylic... Model: The one and only Caroline Madison. I took the picture with my new Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I love it! As you can see in the making here below, I've used different light sources, that's why the shadows go in different directions. I need to get more powerful spotlights for my studio... It's already my 3rd Flesh and Acrylic work with Caroline. See the other ones.

This is the first part of a project I worked on last week. Featuring Caroline Madison. I'll post the second part in a few days... Following several questions, let me explain a few points: I think Caroline's silhouette stands out more without the black lines. Furthermore, the black paint I used was different and a bit toxic so I didn't want to put it on her skin. This image is only the first part of the project, the second part becomes completely abstract...

Certainly it's not recommended to cover your skin with paint repetitively, I first tried on several parts of my own body, no pain, no irritation... Caroline didn't have problems either. Acrylic paint is water-based so the majority of the substance is not toxic. Acrylic paints with cadmium can be harmful because of the heavy metals they contain. I use acrylic WITHOUT cadmium.

Finally, Caroline is an exceptional model. She is a serene, passionate and determined person. The above photo has been shot with the Samsung NX11, provided by Samsung Electronics. Co., Ltd.
