Sketches of
random people

These are some sketches I recently made in the subway. This is definitely a good exercise to draw faster. Sorry for the simple lines, some of the portraits/caricatures were made in a few minutes, others in a few seconds (colored pencils).

Love it, Ben. I think Belgian Rail (or is it EuroRail) should commission to have your subway portraits displayed in posters. Hope you enjoyed your "speed-drawing" adventure.

Excellent work, Ben, certainly nothing to apologize for; the sketches posses the immediacy of the moment, capturing the tension of the speed in which they were created. In a way, you have not only captured the image of the individual, while successfully focusing in on an interesting feature here and there (particularly the gentleman's nose on the right side of the page), but you have taken them out of time, removing them - in a sense - from the moment that they exist in temporally whilst you capture their image (not unlike the belief of many aboriginals of having their spirits captured through photography). The reason I say this is that you have, in your limited amount of time, only focused on the image of the individuals and there is only one instance of any sort of background detail (the post that the woman is holding). This is something that cannot be so easily accomplished in photography where the picture will capture something of the background unless the focus is very tight on the subject and doesn't allow for anything else to be seen.

Very definitely an excellent exercise ... and good use of your travel time (perhaps even a way to make some money ... make sure you always have some business cards with you saying you do portraits!) .... GREAT portraits ... ;-)

Speaking of which ... I just posted three of your Bush's on my latest ... thanks again.

Dear Ann, good idea, but I might need to improve a bit more before

This was in the "subway" in Brussels

Thanks Peter for sharing these thoughts.
You're so right about the difference between photo and drawing!
