Ilaria La Commare

My tribute to Ilaria La Commare. She was an Italian writer, editor of cafebabel.com (a most renowned multilingual European magazine) and an anti mafia activist. She commited suicide in Paris in March 2009. Rest in Peace. This is my tribute for this woman full of life.

Correspondent since autumn 2005, Ilaria has left us at the age of thirty. It happened the 17th of March in a blaze of desperation or courage, leaving her friends and family immersed in grief. Her life was full of activism, the latter being channelled predominantly through the medium of journalism. But Ilaria La Commare was not only a journalist. She was also an accomplished writer and a fine poet.

From her writing you can deduce a vein of nostalgia for her home region of Sicily. The simplicity of the words in her poetry bring us to regard her island just as she did. Colourful, with a maritime presence, lights, sounds and silence. These silences, graphically expressed in the spaces that she deliberately leaves at the beginning of some of her verses, are the most loaded.

She will be missed.

Mike Palecek :
"The Revolution Begins
in the Heartland"

Mike Palecek is an American writer living in Iowa. Former federal prisoner for peace, Mike served time in county jails and federal prisons for civil disobedience at Offutt Air Force Base during the 1980s. He is a former seminarian and during the 1990s was a reporter for small-town newspapers in Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota.

In 2000, he was the Iowa Democratic Party nominee for the U.S. House of Representatives, Fifth District, receiving 67,500 votes [29%]. Mike lives in Sheldon, Iowa with wife, Ruth, and two children. He works at group home for disabled adults.

He was recently a guest on “Cover To Cover”, on KPFA radio, Berkeley, with host Denny Smithson. They talked about another recent novel by Mike Palecek : “The American Dream” You can listen to the interview here.

Gilad Benari

Photographer Gilad Benari, drawing by ben heine

Gilad Benari is a talented photographer (conceptual artist more precisely) and poet. He is a big inspiration for me and for my evolution as a photographer. With his astounding photos, he lets us see the simple elements of our world in a different and beautiful way.

Gilad says: "I love to vary my experience in photography. I believe that the real joy in photography is in the trivial, in small things".

Gilad comes from Israel (Tel Aviv). The good thing with his photos is that they show another side of his country, often criticized because of it's offensive policy towards Palestine.

He explains: "Israel suffers an image of being a desert land, or simply a war zone, when showing it all over the world news. Being a photographer and a writer, I have a chance to show otherwise."

Mirror-mad,
he photographed reflections:
sunstorms in puddles,
cities in canals,

double portraits framed
in sunglasses,
the fat phantoms who dance
on the flanks of cars.

Nothing caught his eye
unless it bent
or glistered
over something else.

He trapped clouds in bottles
the way kids
trap grasshoppers.
Then one misty day

he was stopped
by the windshield.
Behind him,
an avenue of trees,

before him,
the mirror of that scene.
He seemed to enter
what, in fact, he left.
