"There are no problems, only solutions." Keep walking, keep following your path. Don't pay attention to the people that want you to disappear, just see the positive things happening in your life! This is a photo I took a few kilometers before I arrived to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

These boots were left behind by an anonymous person... Lots of random objects can be found along the Camino, this is mainly because the pilgrims want to throw away their heavy belongings so that they can walk faster... The person walking is a girl (not a boy) with a huge pilgrim bag! "Cariño" in Spanish means "Darling" in English. An amazing man I met during my recent trip in Spain. He didn't talk, he didn't move, but I knew he wanted me to take photos of him... The sheeps and clouds behind were in the perfect position. I was lucky to be there. The above picture has been shot with the Samsung NX11 (Samsung Electronics. Co., Ltd). If you wish, you can view a random detail HERE.

Quite an amazing feature in the Daily Mail by Kerry McQueeney. You can view the full version HERE. I REALLY liked the comments Kerry wrote for each picture. It's always nice to read someone's interpretation on my work. This is the second time my creations are published in the Daily Mail. Here is the first publication (February 2011). Thank u!

Another photo of the great Majka Malíková. Isn't she beautiful? This pic has been shot with the Samsung NX11, provided by Samsung Electronics. Co., Ltd.

I recently met Chloé in Brussels (we are almost neighbours!), she is a Swiss comedian and a video director. She participated until recently in the Belgian radio show "Le Jeu des Dictionnaires". She has one of the most amazing voices I ever heard. The above picture has been shot with the Samsung NX11, provided by Samsung Electronics. Co.

Model: Marisa, she is a special person. I took this picture in Spain, recently. The above photo has been shot with the Samsung NX11, provided by Samsung Electronics. Co., Ltd.

Another photo of the beautiful Majka Malíková (from Slovakia). I met her almost by coincidence at the beginning of my trip in Spain, just before heading to Santiago de Compostela. She used to be a gymnast. There is no trick. She really jumped that high! She is so impressive! I'll post more photos soon. Thanks for watching. Spirals have no end. Our galaxy is a spiral. Love is a spiral! This is a long exposure shot I made while I was walking by night (actually very early in the morning) towards Santiago de Compostela... It was the last day before we reached the magic city. I'll never forget that moment. More photos soon. :D The above picture has been shot with the Samsung NX11, provided by Samsung Electronics. (A picture taken a bit before San Juan de Ortega)

I started walking the Pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela ("Way of St. James") in Puente la Reina the 7th of August 2011 and I arrived in Santiago (Galicia, Spain) the 27th of August. I followed the official camino in Logrono. All together, I walked more than 650 km. The landscapes I discovered were breathtaking and changing everyday. I met crazy people on the way. People with a great soul. I took photos every minute. I'll share the best of them shortly. I did this walk for spiritual reasons only and because I needed a break to think about my future.

The Way of St. James has existed for over a thousand years. It was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during medieval times, together with Rome and Jerusalem. Here below is the "Compostela", a certificate of accomplishment given to pilgrims on completing the Way. I received it when I arrived at the Cathedral of Santiago. It's in Latin! Call me "Beniaminum" from now on! :)

Where does your inspiration about Pencil Vs Camera come from? When did you start the project? Can you remember the first piece of the series?

I have been drawing and taking photography since many years. I had the idea to combine these 2 disciplines in one new art form. This is the first image of the series. This first picture is very simple and realistic, the next images I made became more and more surrealistic and inventive. I started this project in April 2010. It’s still ongoing. I intend to make at least 100 Pencil Vs Camera creations.

Would you please talk about the creative process? When you find something interesting, will you draw something immediately, and then take the photo?

It depends... there are quite a few methods to reach the same results. I sometimes make a drawing first and then take a photo afterwards. In other cases I merge a drawing and a photo digitally. In every case, the drawing is always handmade. Although it may look effortless, each Pencil Vs Camera image requires a lot of work and time.

What’s the biggest difficulty when you’re doing this project?

Drawing is something I’m used to do now. I can draw everything in different styles. Honestly, the most difficult part is to find interesting ideas, dig in my imagination as deep as possible, to always surprise people in a positive way. I hate to be redundant.

Many of your works go with poems by Peter S. Quinn, can you talk about the poet? What’s his most attractive things for you?

I know Peter S. Quinn’s poetry since many years. He has become a good friend and a soul mate. I love his work and the way he sees the world. He is such a talented, prolific and moving person. He often writes poems exclusively for my creations. We have many sources of inspiration in common; we share the same ideals and we live for similar purposes. There is always a fusion between his writing and my visual work. I feel like something big is happening in my heart each time I read his verses.

Will you make photos specifically for one particular project you have in mind or do you take your camera everyday?

I always have a camera with me. I sometimes prepare in advance my projects but most of time I take pictures that I will use or not for future works. For instance, I just came back from a trip in the North of Spain where I walked almost 700 kilometers, (from East to West, towards Santiago de Compostela). I took 200 photos everyday, during one month... I came back with thousands of pictures. And I'll certainly use many of them for my next projects.

As a painter, what does photography mean to you?

In the past, I believed painting and drawing were more meaningful and powerful. I don’t make any specific distinction now; most of my recent creations mix different art forms. Many people told me my photos look somehow like paintings, may be because I always try to remove all the imperfections, and because I try to edit my shots as much as possible. I became interested in photography when I studied Journalism. I’d never think I’d become a photographer one day. There is no limit in photography.

As a self-taught artist, in your opinion, what’s the most important point in art creation?

I think it’s important to be guided by your own creative instinct. There is definitely not a single path to make art. The most interesting is the end result.

Can you describe a usual day lately (ex. will you stay in front of your computer all day or spend much time with friends, or stay late at night for work etc.)

I usually do my creative work in the evening and late at night, and I focus on the administrative documents in the morning. I do spend lots of time in front of my computer. I tried to travel as much as possible. I love spending time in nature, see new landscapes, breath fresh oxygen, meet people, feel free…

What’s your ideal life?

Keep surprising myself, surprise the people following my work, live everyday in a different way, give happiness and find happiness.

What’s you camera’s model?

I currently take photos with a Samsung NX11, it’s a powerful new generation camera. Samsung Imaging sent it to me in the context of their “ImageLoger” program. I intend to opt for a bigger camera soon…

A great looking pilgrim I met in front of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela (Galicia, Spain) at the very end of my 700 km walk. His name is Zapatones and he is a well known living monument in Santiago. The scallop shell on the man's hat has long been the symbol of the Camino de Santiago. It is often found on the shores in Galicia. Over the centuries the scallop shell has taken on mythical, metaphorical and practical meanings, even if its relevance may actually derive from the desire of pilgrims to take home a souvenir.

I took this photo near Santiago de Compostela (Spain). This is the initial shot. As you can see in this case, I didn't change at all the composition of the initial shot. I just slightly modified the contrasts. I like how everything is inverted, even the perspective (the sheep in the background looking bigger than the 3 ones in the foreground...). A picture I took at Venice train station some time ago. Read more about the "Orient Express" here below... The above photo has been shot with the Samsung NX11, provided by Samsung Electronics. Co., Ltd.

A landmark moment in railway history, October 1883 saw the launch of the original Orient Express. Leaving from Paris, it steamed through the Alps, Budapest and Bucharest to Constantinople. Packed with grandees and unheard of luxuries such as soap by the washbasins, reports swiftly came back of its exquisite food, excellent wine and impeccable service. This legendary train continued to carry kings, celebrities and shady characters between great European cities up until its 1920s heyday. Many of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express's current carriages date from this era (read more).

What's your original inspiration for “Pencil Vs Camera”?

I have been drawing and taking photography since many years. I had the idea to combine these 2 disciplines in one new art form. This is the first image of the series. This first picture is very simple and realistic, the next images I made became more and more surrealistic and inventive. I started this project in April 2010. It’s still ongoing. I intend to make at least 100 Pencil Vs Camera creations.

Please describe what you are doing in a few words or phrases when working on a new “Pencil Vs Camera” image.

My primary intention was to create a "battle field" between 2 disciplines: drawing and photography, mixing imagination and reality. The only boundary is my own perception of the world. It's a very exciting project because I can share "pieces of dreams" with the world through illusion and surrealism. I integrate an inventive hand made drawing in front of a realistic background. There are several methods to achieve the same effect. My hand is always clearly visible. The drawing is always in black and white while the photo is often very colorful, this amplifies the contrast between the two disciplines. I like to focus on people’s life, portraits, nature, animals, architecture... the main themes approached in "Pencil Vs Camera" are: Love, Freedom, Death, Friendship and Nature.

Your works touched me because of their peaceful message and their "slow life" feeling. In my opinion, the pencil represents tradition and fantasy, while the camera represents modernization and reality. We are all thirsty for slow life nowadays. What’s your attitude towards living slowly?

That’s a very interesting interpretation. You’re totally right, the hand made pencil drawing belongs to fantasy and imagination while the photography is a simple reflection of modern reality. Concerning my attitude towards slow living, I must say I’m a rather “fast” person willing to be as efficient as possible in everything I’m doing. But this is because I don’t really have the choice; I actually like spending time on my creative projects and thinking about the future. I would really love to live more slowly and this is what I want to convey in my work. But, again I know it’s difficult because we live in a world where everything needs to go extremely fast…

What's the best way to live?

Every life is unique and fascinating; I’m nobody to say what’s the best way to live. I’d just say it’s very important to keep in mind important values and to share the fruits of your work with other people, I think it’s more enriching this way.

Who is your idol?

Well, I don’t know. I don't really "idolize" anyone, that’s a bit too much for me. But I admire and respect lots of people, mainly those who managed to improve the world we live in.

Have you ever been to China? What’s your opinion about China?

I’ve never been to China yet. I hope soon, may be in the frame of a future exhibition... I think it’s an amazing and powerful country. Everybody knows China’s culture is one of the world's oldest and most complex ones. I’d really be happy to discover it from the inside.

(Cette interview est également disponible en français ici)

Hi Ben, could you introduce yourself for our readers and tell us how it all started for you?

I am a drawer, photographer and painter. I was quicly drawn to many kind of arts: music, poetry, drawing and theatre. But for several reasons, I started high studies in a very different field: journalism.

Hopefully, even during these studies, I continued to pursue my passion for drawing and graphic arts. After I quickly worked into journalism, and as a professor, this passion came back and took me...

You are famous as an artist mixing several arts: photography, illustration, painting; What pushed you to mix all these different techniques ?

I started with drawing, then painting. Photography really took my attention when I was studying journalism. I don't have a formal artistic background. So I always liked crazy projects, out of the ordinary. I am fascinated about illusion and magic. I practiced several artistic medium and I did not want to let one or another, I thought it would be great to mix several techniques to create something new. Some people call that "mixed media".

Is there one art that you like the most?

Until now, drawing was the track I followed during my evolution, but I think man can reach a level of quality and blooming in any kind of art. Most important is to give the maximum into what you are doing. There is different kind of potential in every kind of art, I don't see any creativity barrier.

"Pencil Vs Camera", "Digital Circlism", "Flesh and Acrylic"... You work very often by creating a series of images, why? What is the creative process for these series?

I also have a production of photos and drawings that are not really in series. But, in fact, during the years, I realized that it was very rewarding to spend time on a set and dig deeper into all possible variations. It's nice to see how we can develop a concept from different angles. The important thing in a series is not to become redundant and always find new ideas by searching as far as possible in your imagination.

Do you take commission? Who did you work with? What is your ideal client?

Although this is not what I prefer, I realized several commissioned works in recent years, for individuals and businesses. For example, I recently conducted a mini-series of 10 Pencil Vs Camera pictures for a gallery in "Cape Verde" (Start Stuff&Art) and I also recently made one creation for "Diesel". Unfortunately, I must refuse many requests because I prefer to be guided by my own creative instincts and follow my personal inspiration.

Do you travel often for your art projects? Is there a place you love especially ?

I try to travel as much as possible. It is somehow a vital need. To recharge my batteries, I particularly like wandering around the great outdoors. This represents for me a real mental therapy. I return to such a journey through northern Spain in which I walked nearly 700 km in the pilgrimage of "Saint Jacques de Compostelle" (I also had the opportunity to take thousands of photos I'll be able to use soon). When I travel, I have the time to think about my future and take many stock pictures especially during periods when the pressure is intense. My studio is located in Braives, in the countryside, one hour from Brussels, it is a bucolic town where I make most of my traditional creations while I make my digital work in Brussels.

Which are your recent expos?

I just finished an exhibition at the "Gallery Garden" (in Brussels near the European institutions). Several other events are planned in London, Berlin and Brussels in the coming months.

Any new projects?

A lot. I want to finish my first main series ("Pencil Vs Camera", "Digital Circlism", "Flesh and Acrylic"). For the future projects, it's still top secret ... And from a more personal perspective, I also want to start a family.

What do you think of Cosmepix.com concept?

The site is beautiful with a nice and bright interface, the overall look is very professional. It's a good idea to mix passion for art and business. I think it's a company that has a good future.

(Travaux en cours)

The following interview is available in French only.

Hello Ben Heine.
