Seoul by Night

Long exposure photo in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea (Ben Heine Art)
Gangnam Routine (long exposure) © 2013 Ben Heine

A selection of photos I took in downtown Seoul, South Korea, a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed walking by night in the streets of the Gangnam district and visiting Seoul Tower (236m high). I was truly impressed by the beauty, height and style of every building in the city. I travelled to Seoul for a solo exhibition (view the photo report about this event at this link). I took all the photos in this blog post with the new Samsung Galaxy NX Camera.

Led Lights Abstracts in My Studio

Led Lights Abstract Photograph by Ben Heine

A recent project. Long exposure photos. I was playing around with different led lights gadgets in my studio. Leds give beautiful sharp and incandescent lines surrounding the room furniture. It's an experimental project. View my other long exposure photos at the following link or buy some prints to decorate your home.

This is a long exposure photo. This picture is the result of an improvised collaboration with my long time friend Stoff. Model: Caroline Madison. I first "flashed" her then took a 30 seconds picture, while stoff was doing the magic orb in the middle of the composition. This photo is dedicated to my friend Marcel De Munnynck, who passed away a few days ago...

Ghost
.

This is another long exposure photo. I love how scary Caroline looks... (see a detail here below). This picture is the result of an improvised collaboration with my long time friend Stoff (make sure to check out his page , there are some amazing creations to view).

The silhouette on the left is me using Stoff's camera to "flash" the model while my own camera (placed on another tripod just behind me) was capturing the moment =D

Stoff makes incredible "orbs" by playing with home made light sources. Luckily, Caroline Madison was there with us... I first "flashed" her, while stoff was doing the magic orb in the middle of the composition.

I recently took this photo by night at the seaside in Hastings, while I was travelling to the UK for an exhibition in London (Battersea Affordable Art Fair). I lived in Hastings from 2002 to 2003, it was so nice to be there again!

Spirals have no end. Our galaxy is a spiral. Love is a spiral! This is a long exposure shot I made while I was walking by night (actually very early in the morning) towards Santiago de Compostela... It was the last day before we reached the magic city. I'll never forget that moment. More photos soon. :D The above picture has been shot with the Samsung NX11, provided by Samsung Electronics. Co., Ltd.

Fira by Night

A picture I took in Fira (Santorini, Greece), last summer. It is a long exposure shot and I've repainted some parts of it. Fira is the modern capital of the Greek Aegean island, Santorini. It is a traditional settlement. The view from there is magnificent, with a unique panorama showing the 18 km long caldera from southern Cape Akrotiri to northern Cape Ag. Nikolaos, plus the volcanic island Nea Kameni at the center with Thirassia Island in the distant west on blue Aegean water. Fira is a town of white-washed houses built on the edge of the 400 m high caldera on the western edge of the semi-circular island of Thera

Ben Heine Interviewed
by Michal Fanta (*)

.
.
Michal Fanta: What inspired you to become a photographer?

Ben Heine: I've been creating all sorts of images since a long time. I was first mainly a drawer and painter, my conception of art in general changed when I realized how powerful and illustrative photography could be. Flickr has somehow contributed in my evolution as photographer.

Who or what are your influences?

Gilad Benari, a great contemporary photographer, was my first influence in this discipline. Many other artists on FLickr have also given me insight and stimulation.

In your Flickr profile you say that you are mostly self-taught. What do you do to educate yourself?

Yes, I'm mainly a self-taught artist, I briefly studied sculpture and painting in England but Journalism is what I've been trained to do (I have a license in journalism), but I never really worked as a journalist… irony and nonsense, I know, but my passion for visual arts was always stronger. At the very beginning, it has been a little hard for me to handle all the technical devices associated to any artistic productions. But I think if you stay focused on your ideas and goals, you'll always manage to be heard in the crowd.

What has the “Pencil vs Camera” project given to you (so far)? Has it changed your perception of the world in any way?

No, it hasn't really changed my perception of the world, it has changed the way I’m working on my new artistic projects. This series has helped me being published in many countries, which is something great.

Has the Flickr community helped your photography? (if so, how?)

I would say: Yes, definitely, because the friendly community on Flickr is really helpful and proactive. When I started posting pictures on FLickr several years ago, I was sort of motivated to do each time better because I received useful critiques and feedbacks from other Flickr users. I see the Flickr platform as a huge and creative brainstorming laboratory that can lead to the most amazing experimental artistic projects…

What is more important in taking pictures: the gear (camera, lenses,...) or the photographer? And why?

In my opinion, the vision, the skills and the imagination of the person behind the camera is more effective than any powerful gear. It’s certainly true that very expensive lenses and camera bodies are often a guarantee of quality but I think photos taken with the most simple devices can also be interesting if they are creative, unexpected and innovative…
